Background story

Three huge valley oaks, bordering the south property line, melted my heart and led me to build my home on a half acre site in south Redding in November, 2007.  My garden is mixture of soft and hardscape that has evolved over 4 years from my mind’s eye not any design experience.  Although I am near the Sacramento River the soil has been a challenge with a layer of caleche clay roaming through the property.   Soil amendment is a must but at least I am not troubled with rocky clay.

My goal is to have only those plants that love Redding for all its summer heat and its cold, rainy winters.  The Arboretum gardens, numerous private homes and other passionate gardeners have been my inspiration.  I absolutely love plants and seldom walk away from a nursery without one or more new ones.   Then I find a place to plant.

Another important component of my garden is art.  Plants and artifacts go hand in hand and each complements the other.  They are both the basis for conversation and questions for those who wander through the garden.  Elements of concealment and surprise are written into the landscape.  And, joyfully, art is not seasonal therefore it provides color and structure throughout the year.  Having this diversity in the place where I spend much of my time gives me inspiration, tranquility and comfort.

Gardening is labor of love.  It is therapeutic and a distraction from the tribulations of daily life.  Some of my favorite plants are Euphorbia, grasses, Chilopsis and …forget it!  I love them all.

Lynne.
