My personal notes
: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Iris douglasiana (California Lilac) is a Californian coastal native. There it grows in open areas in full sun. When I was near Patrick's Point I saw them growing in a meadow. It was already June and they were full in flower. Here in Redding they flower a lot sooner, in spring.
Here I have been told, it likes in Redding the afternoon shade to cope with the burning sun. I placed it behind the house on two places both shaded by bigger plants. They are doing well.
Iris douglasiana comes in a variety of colors. I have white and yellow flowering species, but blue ones are also very common.
