My personal notes
: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Calycanthus occidentalis (Bleeding Heart) is a local native and can be found in moist wooded areas. I saw them near French Gulch along a stream covered from the sun by several trees. In Victoria Garden I found a place for it in the back yard where it will be shaded in summer by the Clerodendrum bungei 'Cashmere Bouquet' (Rose Glory Bower). I have been reading that this plant does equally well under pines, making it one of the few understory plants for pines.
It will flower in early spring, before the Clerodendrum will leaf out, just like I have seen in nature. By flowering so early in the year it is an important food source for butterflies, bees and birds.
Later in summer, when it gets really hot this plant will disappear, to sprout out again the next late winter. So don't think, you killed this native, just wait till next winter.

What are your experiences?
