My personal notes: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Fremontodendron californicum (Flannelbush or Fremontia) is a California local native. You can find them along highway 96 towards Lassen along the road. It certainly is drought tolerant. I have seen it growing in very poor soil, miles away from any stream in an area with quite some frost in winter.
I find this a very interesting shrub. The big yellow flowers in late spring are a real treat and the leaves have an unusual shape.
One negative aspect of this plant I found out last year. I was collecting seeds for the Native Plant Society, when I my whole body started itching. I didn't noticed at first, but all the stems, twigs and seed capsules have tinny fluffy hairs that irritated my skin. Never the less, still one of my favorite shrubs.
It is not an easy plant to grow. My first Flannel bush did wonderful. It was growing fast and produced each year loads of flowers. However the spot I planted it in was affected by the oak rot fungus and the plant died of it. I could see that the roots were attacked by the honey mushroom, the fruit of the oak rot fungus.
So I bought a new one and placed it this time in the front yard. Till now it is doing fine. Now it will be its second year and I stopped watering. I hope the oak rot fungus will it leave alone this time.
