My personal notes: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Ribes aureum (Golden Currant) is Californian native that grows in stream banks or other wetlands. It is a tolerant plant. This shrub prefers afternoon shade, but does endures full sun as well. It will do best when watered regularly, but is amazing drought tolerant.
When flowering, in Redding in March and April, the flower abundance is so striking, that all the plants at McConnell Arboretum & Botanical Gardens nursery are sold out in no time. Not only people are fond of this plant,  the hummingbirds will be grateful if you plant them.
I haven't seen them fruiting till now. But Las Pilitas Nursery says following: "They are about the size of blueberries, the seeds are not bad and the flavor is excellent. The berries can be either yellow, red, or purple when ripe."
