My personal notes: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Acanthus mollis, (Bear's Breeches).Where ever I lived, in the Netherlands, England, Germany or here in Redding, CA, I always had Acanthus mollis in my garden. A very hardy plant, survives heavy frost, but loves here in Redding a place in the afternoon shade.
With its large deep double serrated leaves and large flower stocks with white and lavender blue flowers it is a real eye catcher in the garden. In cooler area's this plant disappears underground in winter and flowers it in summer. In Redding, the plant is a evergreen, a very decorative plant in winter and spring. It flowers in May and drops here in my garden most of its leaves midsummer, to grow them back in Fall.
