My personal notes: (be aware that this are my experiences in Victoria Garden. In other places in and around Redding, this plant can behave differently)

Aster occidentalis (Western Aster)
I have seen this plant growing next to Gumboot Lake, a montane lake not far from Mnt. Shasta. It is a wetland plant, but according to Calflora it is equally likely to occur in non wetlands. Mostly it can be found on higher elevations between 4,000 and 10,000 feet.
This plant  seems happy in my "sunken garden" at the back of our house. Shaded in summer by the fast growing Artemisia 'Powis Castle' and getting plenty of wetness and cold nights in winter, it grows well.
